Stage 1 learners were introduced to the concept of “properties of materials” with a brainstorming session where the focus of the discussion was on the different types of materials used to make their toys. The children were encouraged to think about the questions-
Is your toy made of more than one material?
Can you name any of the materials your toy is made of?
Is there anyone else who has a toy made of the same material?
The learners got different kinds of toys for this activity, including metal, plastic and wooden toys; stuffed animals and toys that require batteries. A station was set up in the classroom with labels of diff. kinds of materials. Each child has to sort their toys as per the property of the material into the correct group.
