“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. On 28 August 2021, Ms Dalbir Kaur, Director, One up Library, Delhi, conducted The Reading program session for the parents of Sr. KG, Grades I, II, Stages 1 and 2. The session commenced by asking the parents about their hopes and aspirations for their child’s reading and writing. The speaker engaged the audience in meaningful discussions highlighting the common problem with communication and shared about the parents’ role in a child’s reading journey. With her expertise, Ms Dalbir guided on how families can celebrate readers, books and create an environment for child’s reading. Parents were encouraged to participate and review a story cover page with the strategy – I see, I think, I wonder. Through this, the speaker emphasized the importance of “say more” in the development of a child’s vocabulary, expressing feelings, making opinions, and critical thinking. In a very captivating and interactive way, Ms Dalbir showed the integration of technology and reading. She discussed excellent techniques to build speculative thinking in readers and how readers can connect with the books. By busting the common myths of reading, the speaker explained the role of reading in the curriculum, how fiction aids in developing kindness, empathy, problem-solving in young readers, how children develop the ability to express thoughts, feelings and question prejudices. It was an enriching session understanding how we strive to build readers and writers in our school.
