Empower Your Child’s Learning: A Parent’s Guide

September 6, 2024

“The best inheritance a parent can give his/her children is his/her time.”

In today’s fast-paced world, parents play a crucial role in nurturing their child’s educational journey outside of the classroom. Whether your child is embarking on their early learning adventure or navigating the challenges of high school, creating a supportive learning environment at home can significantly enhance their academic success and personal growth. Here’s a comprehensive guide for parents to support their child’s learning journey at home.

  1. The power of positivity – A child who studies is definitely at work! As adults we would all agree that one of the most valuable assets in any work place is a calm corner where the mind is free to ideate, visualise, create and excel. It’s hence important to aim at creating a conducive atmosphere for learning. Every child develops an academic rhythm. The best form of support here would be to lead your child towards organization and do remember to stock up the stationary. This will to help to stay on top of assignments and deadlines.
  2. Leave the door open! – Open Communication with your child about their academic progress, interests, and challenges is very crucial and even more effective is attentively listening to any concerns your child might have. Encourage, listen, address, and support. Discuss their aspirations. This is a powerful motivator and will help your child to stay focused on the learning journey.
  3. Discovering books! – Reading is an inculcated habit; and a very valuable one at that. Encourage your child to befriend books and read regularly. You can build a small library of age-appropriate books. Family reading time can be a fun-filled yet intellectually engaging activity for all age groups alike. Reading promotes comprehension and critical thinking skills. At Suchitra Academy, one of Hyderabad’s top schools, we believe in walking the talk. Through initiatives like the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) program, students discover refuge from the digital age’s distractions, delving into the captivating realms of literature every Thursday morning. Teachers, serving as role models, foster a culture of reading and curiosity. Additionally, the academy’s collaboration with Amira Learning transforms how early readers engage with English literature, providing personalized tutoring through an AI-driven platform. Recognized as one of the Best Inventions of 2021, Amira embodies the school’s commitment to educational excellence and innovation. Students are encouraged to contribute their voices, share perspectives, and invigorate the library’s atmosphere with energy. With a collection of over 16,000 books and an Annual Book Fair showcasing literary wonders, the school nurtures an environment conducive to instilling the invaluable habit of reading, empowering students on a journey of intellectual growth and exploration.
  4. Get ‘Hands-On’ – The best way to engage with your child would be to reinforce all that’s done in the classroom. You can do this with innumerable interactive activities and educational experiences at home – exploring science experiments, arts and crafts projects, and educational games to make learning enjoyable and engaging for your child the list can go on. The Exit Points of Suchitra Academy ensure that toddlers and their parents indulge in learning experiences together. In the IEYC classrooms parents are often encouraged to extend classroom learning at home and are given tasks like taking the child to a construction site to understand building materials, the market to understand green vegetables etc. These endeavours have won the school accolades and awards like the Global Indian Learning Award for best implementation of Project-based learning and Global Indian Learning Award innovative practices in pre-school.
  5. Homework – Let’s just say that Homework is when home works! Take an active interest in your child’s homework and assignments. Guide. Assist. If the task at hand is complex break discuss the objective and break it down into smaller bits. By doing this you will achieve two things – one is that you would’ve helped your child to achieve simpler tasks which will motivate to complete the whole task, and two is that in the process of breaking down and setting and achieving milestones, your child will develop this habit which will become a systematic way to go about achieving any task.
  6. Tech-tools – Technology has immense influence in our lives. Instead of trying to fight the perils, a smarter parenting approach would be to use tech to benefit and enhance your child’s learning experience. From educational websites, apps to online resources that align with your child’s interests and curriculum tech can truly be the go-to friend! A heads-up here though – monitor screen time and encourage responsible use of technology for learning.
  7. The right mind-set – Foster a growth mindset in your child by emphasizing the importance of perseverance, resilience, and effort in achieving their goals. Encourage them to view setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth, and instil confidence in their abilities.
  8. Be in the know – It’s always nice to partner with educators – your child’s teachers and school staff to stay informed about their academic progress and any areas of concern. Attend parent-teacher conferences and actively engage in your child’s educational journey. Caution – Be subtle and gentle. Don’t overdo this lest you cross a line of trust with your child. It’s best to always let your child know the ‘why’ you are connected.
  9. Be a role model – Children learn best with their eyes! Set the right example. Be the positive role model – become a lifelong learner and leader as states Suchitra Academy’s vision. Share your own experiences of overcoming challenges and pursuing passions to inspire and motivate your child.
  10. Celebrate Achievements – No achievement is big or small. Boost your child’s confidence and self-esteem. Create a supportive environment where they feel valued and appreciated for their efforts, and recognize their progress along the way.
